3.30.11 - Ballet Pose Sketch

Another ballet pose. I think I'm getting the hang of this.

Reference
Just a note;
I'm not aiming to recreate my references.
I intentionally alter parts of my sketches.

  1. I'm really looking forward to seeing your work when you incorporate shading. I think you're pretty good at defining form, so I'd love to see you become even more refined with it.

  2. Looking good, but I still see a lot of anime influences in your sketches that seem to be "blocking" your ability to really see form.

The reference dancer has a much more substantial body than your sketch. Her torso is much wider, and the small of her back (from her bra to her shorts) is much shorter than in your drawing.
Her legs are also much more substantial. Even if you want to draw thin people, you still have to accurately study thin people. The dancer has much more muscular legs, and those legs "grow out of" her buttocks, which are also much more than two little circles. The buttocks are a pair of strong, malleable muscles that power the legs. Think of them more as the tops of legs rather than a "butt".

I also suggest you begin to pay more attention to the head. Draw what you see, not the common symbolic imagery we associate with heads. Make sure to add ears and a nose, at least, paying attention to how they line up with other features of the face. You heads are looking a little flat right now (an understandable anime symptom).

Now, I'm also going to go out on a limb and suggest that you have been listening to the AD crowd on Gaia a bit too much. Right now, I really, really suggest that study and copy the reference images exactly as you see them. Really STUDY them. I know you want to be politically (artistically?) correct and not "eyeball", but I think you are smart enough to know the difference between copying a Naruto screencap and calling it your own, and studying an image for your own education.

Anyway, I think you progressing well, and I hope to continue seeing more!

  3. My problem was that I was afraid to "eyeball", but now I really understand the difference.

I never really drew anime, but I have my own way of stylizing things that I need to break.

My new studies [when I get back to them. Too much schoolwork lately...], will be as accurate to the reference as possible.

I've just always been more of a simplistic art person I guess. I want to practice heads and faces separately from poses and anatomy right now though. I'd like to just focus on one thing at a time, to help keep me from being overwhelmed. It's bad enough as is xD

Eventually, I'd like to do all of it at once though, when I'm more confident in my abilities.

I'm still testing the waters right now, trying to figure out what will work the best for me.

Thanks for taking the time to write out these comments on my posts (:

  4. Of course; you're welcome.

Sorry about the anime comparisons. It's just that it does look typical of someone who has drawn anime for a while. I also use that comparison since people can sometimes better understand their inherent stylistic flaws that way. Hope it didn't offend you. :)

  5. I like to class my general CG art as cartoons I guess? Never really could figure out the house style...
I've never personally cared much for hyper realism, but I tried to make my anatomy as realistic as possible. I elongate the limbs though, because I'm personally lanky. I exaggerate in my art a lot...

I'm trying to break out of that for the sake of study and improving. It's proving difficult though lol

I really see what you were talking about now, with her back in particular. I think I need to start from the feet/legs and work up. I feel like my torsos and upper half of the body is always so weak compared to the legs.
I feel most comfortable with the legs and lower half, so I think I'll use that as my base instead of starting with the head.

Also, I wasn't offended at all haha
Just wanted you to know that I'm not an anime brat ):
