To the Birds

Spring Break this week, but I've been feeling very ill and spending most of my freetime sleeping lol
So here we have a pose developed from my mind. No reference, though I will go through and use some when I do this again for a digital piece.

The camera must have been at a weird angle, because this looks way more out of proportion than it does in my sketchbook... I'll try to scan this later to get a better image.

Don't mind the messy feathers, I'm just planning out the image. Need to do wing studies.
Also lol, claw hand.

Edit: So, I totally tried to redo this in SAI. With a mouse. I really need my tablet lol

  1. I'm likin' the pose. Something that you may want to consider though, especially when working without references, is where the weight of the body is concentrated. I just tried the pose out myself, and it feels like the weight is balanced between the two feet (although perhaps a little more towered the foot she isn't sitting on) Something I've learned is that you can usually draw a line from the middle of the neck down to where the weight is focused. The body will adjust itself so that this is true (since this is what keeps you balanced). Because her arms are reaching up, her weight is shared entirely between the two feet. This means that her butt and most of her torso would end up on the other side of the line than her face and legs (if you were to draw that line from her neck down to the heel of that front foot). Also, because she can't use her arms to balance her, she would have to curve her spine more (enhancing the S-shape) and lean her chest towards that bent leg, in order to keep herself from falling backwards.

It really helps to try the pose out yourself a few times, even if you don't have a mirror handy. Getting a feel for the weight as well as the gracefulness and comfortability of a pose will really aide you in creating a more natural-looking figure, sans reference.

Let me know if you need any clarification (sometimes it can be difficult to understand things like this without a visual reference). I can sketch up a thumbnail image to illustrate what I'm trying to say if need be.

  2. Oh, thank you!

I was trying to go for an arched back pose, because her foot that she's sitting on would help to keep her from falling backwards.

Kind of wanted her to be like a bird showing off her feathers.

When I try out the pose, I'm resting more on the foot I'm sitting on [her right], causing me to lean back a bit to make my arms look more dramatic xD
When I get my new tablet, I was thinking of arching her back a bit more, and tilting her face up to make it look more dramatic like she's a diva or something haha
It's just kind of frustrating to try to draw with a mouse right now.

Not a great reference, but something kind of like this for her overall expression http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3603/3551476783_47dab59955.jpg

Kind of a mix between "Oh! Woe Is Me!" and Black Swan I guess

I would love to see a thumbnail from you though! I don't think I'm drawing the weight correctly, so that would really help.

  3. Ah, okay I see what you were going for with the weight then. I definitely think tilting her head up would be a good choice - adds a lot of drama to the image. I think this could really benefit from some extreme angles. Needs more ... oomph, you know? I'll try to do a couple thumbnails to show you what I mean. I think you're definitely on the right track though.

And I applaud you for doing that with a mouse. I'm like, mouse-tarded. xD

  4. Thumbnails are greatly appreciated.
I'm still so horrid with angles and foreshortening xD

And oh man, working with a mouse is such a pain. I can't wait for my tablet to get here. Amazon needs to hurry up and ship it out already.

  5. Okay, I've got a thumbnail sketch for you (after looking at your updated drawing). Just to point out some issues that I saw and to help you understand what I meant about weight. Can I send it to you in a PM on Gaia? I'd feel rude posting it on your blog.

And I can't even imagine how difficult it is for you. You used to have a tablet before this, didn't you? Must be torture going back to using a mouse. Hope your new one arrives soon!

  6. A PM on Gaia is fine ^_^

    Yeah, I used to have a tablet. I've actually never used a mouse for drawing prior to this <_<;
Can't wait for my Bamboo Fun to get here lol
